Investment in 1-character short domains proved to be a good opportunity. Analysing the 1-single-letter-domains.com sales, that belong to the lowest price sales segment for this assets (so called fast-flips) the average domain value grew by 238% from the year 2013. The strongest growth by value can be seen 2016. This trend shown in the providers own data seem also to be backed by other numbers like auction sales on Flippa where many domains get sold currently at prices around 2500$.
An increased interest in China 2016 lead to a situation where prices for 1-number domains outperformed the prices of 1-letters, what was the opposite until now.
Real 1-character short ccTDL domains are very rare - 1-single-letter-domains.com estimates less than 2500 of this shortest-type domains worldwide. Each country can offer only 36 such domains but most countries are blocking the possibility of registration. The domains can also have interesting technological advantages. Twitter for example uses T.CO for making a shorter link. Also available domains currently get bought out within seconds when getting free to the market. This year some of worlds biggest tech companies bought 1-chars. There are speculations if they are planning to use it for some new kind of services (read more about here).
Our numbers do only list domain sales up to 5000 USD/domain not including exceptional sales that we filtered out.
For example our sale of I.NF at over 9000$ in this year has not been listed in the 2016 results. Also for 2016 the
report lists only sales until July 2016. We expect an updated report with full 2016 data will correct the current
value even stronger upwards.
The figures show only sales of worlds shortest format ccTLD 1-char domains like X.GL, not the new nTLD domains
like 1.XYZ.
Year | domains | average rise | average domain price (USD) |
---|---|---|---|
2013 | 7 | - | 554 |
2014 | 6 | +58% | 880 |
2015 | 12 | +17% | 1036 |
2016 | 3 | +81% | 1876 |
Interesting is also to compare other domain sales from the opposite side - the highest sales. Below table presents the 5 highest ccTLD sales according to DNJournal.com:

By the way the highest sale value ever that we know about has been Z.com that sold at 6.800.000 USD. Because of the unique position of .com and the fact that no new registrations of 1-char .com are possible this prove to be an excellent asset.
